Aultman College Students Take Second Place in National PSA Contest

March 08, 2011

CANTON, Ohio (March 8, 2011) — Aultman College of Nursing and Health Sciences students Danielle Rollins and Pamela Heim, both of Canton, took second place in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest for the National Eating Disorders Screening Program.

The contest, sponsored by Screening for Mental Health (SMH), was developed to give college students a chance to educate their peers about the consequences of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and to encourage students to assess their risk by taking an online screening at www.CollegeResponse.org.

According to SMH, their video was selected because of “its powerful message and supporting statistics.”

For Rollins, the project was especially personal. “I struggled with an eating disorder in my late teens and early twenties, to the point that I required hospitalization,” she said.  “With the help of a nutritionist and the motivation of wanting to become a mother to healthy children, I was able to change my behaviors.”

Rollins and Heim produced the PSA with editing support from Tom Davis, Aultman Hospital media services specialist. The students entered the contest as part of a service learning project suggested by their instructor Perri-Anne Concialdi, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

The Aultman College students faced stiff competition as approximately 20 videos were entered into the contest, according to SMH.  First place was awarded to a student from Auburn University and third place was awarded to a student from Virginia Tech.  The winning videos were provided to more than 600 colleges in association with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (Feb. 20-26) and will be used to help colleges educate their students.
