Sharon Lane Memorial Service is Friday
June 06, 2012
CANTON, Ohio (June 5, 2012) — “Born to honor, Ever at peace.” These are the words inscribed on the memorial statue of 1st Lieutenant Sharon Ann Lane. Lane graduated from the Aultman School of Nursing in 1965 and three years later enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserve. She was deployed in the Vietnam War; this is where she became the first and only American service woman to die as a direct result of enemy fire in Vietnam.
Since her death, Aultman has held a memorial ceremony every year in honor of her service and courage. This year’s ceremony will be held Friday, June 8 at 6 p.m. inside the Sharon Lane Health Information Center at Aultman Hospital, off the Seventh Street SW lobby.
After the memorial service, a wreath of honor will be placed at Lane’s bronze commemorative statue outside the hospital. The statue of Lane was generously refurbished in 2009 by Steven Coon of Coon Restoration and Sealants, Inc.
Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be a part of this 42nd memorial ceremony.
