Again this year, Aultman Health Foundation participated in the 2014 Harvest for Hunger campaign during the month of March. With all combined food and financial donations, Aultman is able to provide a total of 74,107 meals for individuals struggling with hunger in the community. Aultman employees collected 10,764 pounds of food, making them a top donor in the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s annual campaign. Aultman also collected a total of $16,284.30 in monetary donations.
This year’s March Madness campaign theme was “Hoop it Up Against Hunger”! Employees didn’t just raid their kitchen pantries for food donations, but they got creative. The Harvest for Hunger committee, made up of Aultman employees, held several fundraising events to help their cause.
Donations were collected during children’s basketball and cheerleading clinics with the Canton Charge. Several specials were run in conjunction with Aultman’s eateries, The Breakaway Café and Seasons Café, to raise additional funds. The most successful special event was a spaghetti luncheon, served to Aultman employees by the Aultman executive team. In addition, the Aultman Blood Center helped out by donating $10 to Harvest for Hunger for every blood donation received during the monthly employee blood drive.
Harvest for Hunger is a collaborative effort of four food banks in Northeast Ohio that is one of the largest food and funds drives in the nation. The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank provides food to food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters and other hunger-relief programs in Stark and surrounding counties.
One in every four children in our service area is food insecure. Hunger affects children, seniors, the disabled and even working adults. In our community, about 180,000 people rely on the Foodbank for emergency food assistance each year. An average of 72,000 meals worth of food is distributed each day from the Akron-Canton Foodbank.
