CANTON, Ohio (May 29, 2014) - North Canton resident Tom Hayes received multiple honors at Aultman’s annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. In addition to receiving The President’s Gold Award and being inducted into the Aultman Volunteer Hall of Fame, he received the top honor of Aultman Hospital Volunteer of the Year.
Hayes has been volunteering in the Aultman Valet Services department since October 2010, where he has accumulated more than 3,550 hours of service. He received multiple nominations for the award and was praised by all for his extraordinary customer service and dedication.
“I love greeting and helping the patients and customers,” Hayes said. “It’s very rewarding.”
A third-grade teacher with Plain Local Schools for 35 years, after retirement in 2010, Hayes was ready to do something different.
“I had always received great care at Aultman, so I figured it would be a great place to volunteer.” Hayes explained. “And, it really is. Aultman Hospital is the best – the employees are wonderful to work with!”
Hayes couldn’t say enough kind words about the Valet Services team he works with in the Aultman Bedford building. “The guys over there - Dan, Tony, Adam and Toby – they are the greatest group to work with. We’ve truly become like a family. We hang out, go out to eat and we’ve even gone on trips together!”
Hayes works every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, often coming in early and staying late to assist when needed. In addition to his time spent at Aultman, Hayes is active in his church, singing in both the choir and quartet. He is also a huge Cleveland Indians fan.
“I get so much more out of volunteering than I actually give,” Hayes said. “It’s the best thing I do every week.”
About 175 of the more than 600 Aultman volunteers were honored for their service and dedication at Skyland Pines Golf & Banquet Center on May 17. This year’s Aultman Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was themed, “Bright Lights, Big City, Brilliant Volunteers.”
