Aultman Earns Coveted National Award for Nursing Excellence

CANTON, Ohio - April 13, 2006 - Aultman has been recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with the prestigious Magnet award for nursing excellence, an award shared by 3 percent of hospitals in the nation. Aultman is the only organization in the Akron-Canton area with this high-level nursing care award.

Research shows that Magnet designated facilities have positive outcomes for patients, nurses and workplaces. Specifically, patients experience lower mortality rates, shorter lengths of stay and increased satisfaction. Magnet facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining quality nurses, physicians and interdisciplinary professionals.

Aultman Health Foundation President and CEO Edward J. Roth III, said, "I join the Board, physicians and all other employees at Aultman in congratulating our nurses at Aultman on achieving the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence. This award serves as a measurement of quality that is recognized by accrediting bodies throughout the country. But more importantly, it serves as a measure for the quality of care patients can expect when they come to Aultman."

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes excellence in:

  • Nursing management, philosophy and practices;
  • Adherence to standards for improving quality of patient care;
  • Leadership of the nurse administrator in supporting professional practice;
  • Ongoing competence of nursing personnel, and
  • Respect for the cultural and ethical diversity of patients and care providers.
"The announcement made by the ANCC that Aultman has been awarded the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence is one of the highpoints in Aultman's history," said Eileen Good, RN, chief nursing officer.

"The Magnet Award is the highest honor awarded to nurses. While the application and appraisal processes were challenging, the part of the process that deserves recognition is the commitment to quality that is required to meet the standards of the program. This honor recognizes Aultman nurses for their outstanding contribution to patient care," she said.

Aultman's Magnet status, which includes annual reviews, is valid for four years. The ANCC is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States.
