Aultman College Students Receive Top Honors At Ohio Nursing Student Convention
CANTON, Ohio (Oct. 26, 2009) -- An all-male team of Aultman College nursing students knocked out the defending champs from the University of Toledo, along with teams from 11 other schools, to claim the title for the 2nd Annual Brain Bowl at the Ohio Nursing Students’ Association (ONSA) convention in Dublin, Ohio, this past weekend.
Team members include Corey Bukovitz and Jonathon Sidle from Orrville, Chris Stutzman from Dover and Michael Shimp from Akron.
Brain Bowl consists of five rounds of 10 questions modeled after those from the NCLEX-RN licensure exam, which students take at the completion of their nursing education. Two Aultman College teams competed in the Brain Bowl. The women’s team made it to the semi-final round, while the men’s team had a perfect score during the last two rounds of the competition, sealing their victory.

The recognition for Aultman College students continued when Louisville resident Katie Denslow, president of the Aultman College Student Nurse Association (ACSNA), was awarded the state Nursing Student of the Year award. Katie was nominated by Brittany Fehlman, ACSNA chapter advisor, for her dedication to promoting and growing the organization. “Katie has taken every avenue to promote the benefits and awareness of ACSNA to all students,” said Fehlman. “In my career, I have not met a more passionate and dedicated student.”
The recognition of Aultman College students at the state level is no surprise to College president Rebecca Crowl. “The intimate size of our nursing degree program gives our students the opportunity to get very involved on campus and to work closely with faculty and staff to master the curriculum,” said Crowl. “Our students set their sites on performing well at this competition and we are very proud of them for achieving their goals. We feel it is further proof of the quality of nursing education provided at Aultman College.”
Ten Aultman College students, sponsored by the Aultman College Alumni Association and Aultman College, attended the ONSA convention. ONSA is the state chapter of the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA). With a membership of approximately 50,000 nationwide, the NSNA mentors the professional development of future nurses and facilitates their entrance into the profession by providing educational resources, leadership opportunities, and career guidance.
