Aultman Patient Satisfaction

What is the HCAHPS survey?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services created a survey – called the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. Its intent is to provide a standardized survey and data collection method to measure patients’ perspectives on hospital care.

Patients responding to the HCAHPS survey rate everything from communication with the medical staff to facility cleanliness and quietness to overall satisfaction with the hospital. The infomation below was released in June 2009, and the data is from patients with overnight hospital stays from October 2007-September 2008.

What does this information mean to consumers?

While many hospitals measure patient satisfaction, there was no national standard for collecting or reporting this information that would enable valid comparisons to be made across all hospitals. As a result, the national HCAHPS survey was created to help consumers make “apples-to-apples” comparisons about health-care facilities. Public reporting of the survey results is designed to create incentives for hospitals to continuously improve the quality of care they provide.
